Mosaics

What Is a Mosaic?

Mosaics is the art of arranging small colored pieces of hard material, such as stone, tile, or glass. Archeologists have traced the art of Mosaics to over 4,000 years ago, as old as ancient Mesopotamia! These materials will withstand time. Venture to historic cities like Rome and Athens and you can walk across the same mosaic flooring from thousands of years ago!

What will I learn?

At The Glass Bar, we're committed to reviving the art of Mosaics. Wendy Birchmire is our trusted instructor with over 10 years of experience and she's here to share her technique! She puts a fun new spin on this old technique by creating contemporary art for the modern home.

Who are these classes for & what should I expect?

Our mosaic classes are perfect for anyone over 10. We have crafted our classes to suit students with all skill levels, from novice to master. You will learn the historic steps of Mosaic Art. This includes using materials such as glass, tile, stone, and more to create a design. You will work to lay out the design, gluing it down in the process. Finally, you will grout the piece, work some magic cleaning and you're done! You will leave with your finished piece at the end of the session.

INTRO TO MOSAICS

Saturdays 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Join us as we explore the ancient art of Mosaics. In this class, students will work to embellish a picture frame with precut glass and other materials such as tiles, penny rounds, and beads.

We will work from a selection of precut materials, such as square tiles, penny rounds, and beads.

Wendy will challenge students to create a frame that they are proud of! They will learn how to use glass nippers to shape pre-cut pieces of glass. Using this technique, they will work to design a picture frame that they can keep or give as a gift. Who doesn’t have a photograph that could use a unique frame? The glue used needs at least 24 hours to dry before grouting. Students will watch a demonstration of the grouting technique in class and then be sent home with detailed instructions and all the necessary supplies to complete their work.
