WHO WE ARE
Sheryl and Jordan, a mother-daughter team are the creators of The Glass Bar. During the years of 2008 to 2012 both Sheryl and Jordan battled cancer. Depending on each other for love and support the two grew stronger and closer than ever. Together they looked to the arts for creative and expressive freedom. From this, The Glass Bar transformed from dream to reality.
Mother of 5 & grandmother of 6. She started working with glass in 1996, and after 20 years of bookkeeping she turned her dream into a reality. In 2012, she moved her studio from her garage to 200 sq. ft. space at Gorse Mill. From Gorse Mill, she moved to the 600 sq. ft. Dedham Ave location, and loves sharing the experience of working with glass with others.
Jordan graduated Emmanuel College in 2013, with a degree in Writing and Literature. She has always been one for the arts, exploring photography throughout high-school and college, but was very hesitant to pick up the glass cutters. Finally after watching her mother work and create beautiful glass creations, Jordan threw in the towel and began teaching herself how to cut and fuse glass. She hasn’t stopped creating since!
The Courage Class
In September of 2008 Jordan received the most staggering news of her life. She had stage two Burkitt’s lymphoma. The next couple of months were really hard for our family, but finally in April she was granted remission. Everything was just starting to go back to normal when Sheryl was diagnosed with stage-four thyroid cancer. We were knocked off our feet, once again.
It was a very long and agonizing journey for our family, but we pulled through together. In 2010 we found creating glass art. It quickly became a therapeutic escape from the ugliness that was our reality.
In 2012, we opened our first studio. It was a 200 sq ft space in the basement of Gorse Mill in Needham Heights; that we quickly out grew. In 2014 we picked up and moved our entire studio into a 600 sq ft space in Needham Center with lots of windows and beaming sunlight to bring life to the beautiful array of glass art works hanging throughout the space.
But, our dreams are still bigger.
We opened our studio with the intention of spreading the therapeutic benefits that we received by creating art, with others.
We host an event every quarter that is free for cancer patients and their families. During the events the participants are able to leave the sadness and stress at the door while they can focus on relaxing while making artwork. We bring these people who are burdened by disease and show them how to create beauty out of glass.
In order to keep our events frequent and successful we at The Glass Bar in Needham are raising money for a cause we believe everyone is affected by.
We are asking for $5,000 to cover the cost of a larger kiln and installation. The kiln will give more people the opportunity to create fused glass with us.
$2,000 for fusing glass, tools and supplies to get all of us moving on our journey.
And $1,000 for marketing and advertising to reach as many people as possible.
We have a big goal to help a lot of people, and are asking for your help getting there.
Become a part of our mission.
You don’t have to donate, though we appreciate your contributions greatly – but if you could please share our campaign to help us spread the word of our mission!
We would never have gotten this far without our supporters.
Thank you all!
